B. Woo, Jing-Li Yu, Charles Zhang) Nature of the meeting: The Acting Executive Director, S.B. Woo, e-mailed all Executive Committee members to vote on the motion below. Approval: The motion below was unanimously approved by the Executive Committee. Motion: S. B. Woo moves that: "Whereas, the success or failure of Sotomayor's nomination to the Supreme
Court will unavoidably impact 80-20 one way or another;
Whereas, its success is likely to induce the 'rich and prominent' of
our community to empathize more with the struggles of our community;
Whereas, its failure may confirm the view of some of our 'rich and
prominent' that they should continue to go their merry ways, once they
have 'made it' in the mainstream society;
Whereas, all other criteria being equal, we should push for diversity; and
Whereas, our support for Sotomayor may in turn win us support from the
Hispanic community regarding the appointment of Asian Americans
in some particular Appeals courts;
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that 80-20 will openly and strongly support
the confirmation of Sotomayor as a Supreme Court Justice. (End)"
